This article reports the structure of dominance and its relationship with social grooming in wild lion-tailed macaque females.
The strength of dominance hierarchy was 0.79 on a scale of 0 to 1 indicating a moderate linearity in the ranking system. Dominance
scores were converted into an ordinal as well as an interval scale. Grooming scores were also converted into interval scales
using standard scores. Grooming received and grooming given correlated positively and negatively respectively with dominance
ranks indicating that high ranking females received more and gave less grooming. Grooming was also positively related to encounter
rates for dyads of females. More grooming among adjacent ranks, and grooming being more reciprocal, occurred only in the case
of dominant females. The grooming patterns, therefore, appeared to be more of despotic than egalitarian nature. While ranking
macaques into different Grades of social systems ranging from despotic to egalitarian, Thierry (2004) has placed lion-tailed
macaques in Grade 3 corresponding to the ‘relaxed’ social system. Our results indicate that the grooming and dominance relationships
in this species are more despotic, and hence, the Grade for this species requires to be shifted toward 2 or 1. 相似文献

为了建立中枢神经系统肿瘤小鼠模型,构建了大鼠神经元特异性烯醇化酶(ratneu-ron-specificenolase,NSE)基因启动子调控下的猿猴病毒40大T抗原基因(simianvirus40largeTantigengene,SV40TAg)转基因载体,通过受精卵雄原核显微注射的方法制备转基因小鼠。PCR鉴定转基因小鼠的基因型;RT-PCR和Northern印迹检测转基因阳性鼠中SV40TAgRNA水平的表达及其组织特异性;免疫组化检测其蛋白质水平的表达。经显微注射共获得9只首代转基因阳性鼠(首建者,Founder小鼠),其中2例出生时即发生神经干细胞来源的肿瘤,其他Founder小鼠经繁育后共建立了5个SV40TAg转基因小鼠系,其中有4个系检测到SV40TAgRNA水平的表达且特异性地表达于脑组织,但未检测到蛋白质水平的表达。研究表明NSE启动子活性具有较强的组织特异性,并起始于小鼠胚胎发育期;SV40TAg具有明显的致癌作用,且SV40TAg诱发的神经系统肿瘤易造成转基因小鼠早期死亡。 相似文献

In face of accumulated reports demonstrating that uptake of some cell-penetrating peptides occurs through previously described endocytic pathways, or is a consequence of cell fixation artifacts, we conducted a systematic analysis on the mechanism responsible for the cellular uptake of the S413-PV karyophilic cell-penetrating peptide. The results reviewed here show that the S413-PV peptide is able to very efficiently accumulate inside live cells in a rapid, non-toxic and dose-dependent manner, through a mechanism distinct from endocytosis. Comparative analysis of peptide uptake by mutant cells lacking heparan sulfate proteoglycans demonstrates that, although not mandatory, their presence at cell surface facilitates the cellular uptake of the S413-PV peptide. Furthermore, we demonstrate that upon interaction with lipid vesicles, the S413-PV peptide undergoes significant conformational changes that are consistent with the formation of helical structures. Such conformational changes occur concomitantly with a penetration of the peptide into the lipid bilayer, strongly suggesting that the resulting helical structures are crucial for the non-endocytic cellular uptake of the S413-PV peptide. Overall, our data support that, rather than endocytosis, the cellular uptake of the S413-PV cell-penetrating peptide is a consequence of its direct translocation through cell membranes following conformational changes induced by peptide-membrane interactions. 相似文献

We studied amidated and non-amidated piscidins 1 and 3, amphipathic cationic antimicrobial peptides from fish, to characterize functional and structural similarities and differences between these peptides and better understand the structural motifs involved in biological activity and functional diversity among amidated and non-amidated isoforms. Antimicrobial and hemolytic assays were carried out to assess their potency and toxicity, respectively. Site-specific high-resolution solid-state NMR orientational restraints were obtained from 15N-labeled amidated and non-amidated piscidins 1 and 3 in the presence of hydrated oriented lipid bilayers. Solid-state NMR and circular dichroism results indicate that the peptides are α-helical and oriented parallel to the membrane surface. This orientation was expected since peptide-lipid interactions are enhanced at the water-bilayer interface for amphipathic cationic antimicrobial peptides. 15N solid-state NMR performed on oriented samples demonstrate that piscidin experiences fast, large amplitude backbone motions around an axis parallel to the bilayer normal. Under the conditions tested here, piscidin 1 was confirmed to be more antimicrobially potent than piscidin 3 and antimicrobial activity was not affected by amidation. In light of functional and structural similarities between piscidins 1 and 3, we propose that their topology and fast dynamics are related to their mechanism of action. 相似文献

We analyzed diatom and water chemistry data collected by The Academy of Natural Sciences from 47 rivers throughout the eastern United States to address several ecological questions. How does the composition of diatom assemblages vary over large regional scales? What are the most important environmental factors affecting assemblage composition and how does their influence vary among regions and with spatial scale? How do distributions and autecological characteristics of individual taxa vary spatially? What are the implications of answers to these questions for use of diatoms as water quality indicators? Data for 186 samples at 116 sites were collected from 1951 to 1991 on moderate- to large-sized rivers ranging from Maine to Texas as part of Academy monitoring and survey programs, most initiated and implemented by Dr. Ruth Patrick. Several sites were highly impaired by point and non-point source pollution. Diatom assemblages grouped into four main categories, based on multivariate analyses. Group membership correlated equally well with intermediate-scale geographic regions and water chemistry: (1) Northeastern US rivers with lower alkalinity and hardness, and pH 6.5–7.8; (2) Primarily dilute coastal plain rivers in the southeastern United States with the lowest average pH (5.5–7.3) of all sites and some with high DOC; (3) Rivers within and west of the Appalachian Mountains, generally having higher pH (>7.5) than those in other regions, but with relatively low chloride concentrations; and (4) Gulf Coast rivers with the highest chloride (>100 mg l?1), hardness (>250 mg l?1), and pH of rivers in all the groups. Hardness, pH, alkalinity, and Cl explained most of the variation among diatom assemblages, based on ordination analysis. Factors related to water quality problems, such as BOD, P, NH4, and turbidity explained much less variability at the eastern US scale, but were more important in the four intermediate-scale regions. Diatom taxa abundance-weighted mean values for water chemistry characteristics varied among the four intermediate-scale regions, often greatly, and in proportion to the average measured values for each region. Design of calibration data sets for development of water quality indicators should account for spatial scale in relation to species dispersal, regional geochemistry and habitat types, and human-influenced water chemistry characteristics. 相似文献

In the tradition of European phytosociology, delimitations of vegetation units such as associations are mostly based on data
from small areas where more detailed vegetation sampling has been carried out. Such locally delimited vegetation units are
often accepted in large-scale synthetic classifications, e.g. national vegetation monographs, and tentatively assigned to
a small geographical range, forming groups of similar (vicarious) vegetation units in different small areas. These vicarious
units, however, often overlap in species composition and are difficult to recognize from each other. We demonstrate this issue
using an example of the classification of dry grasslands (Festuco-Brometea) in the Czech Republic. The standard vegetation classification of the Czech Republic supposes that the majority of accepted
associations (66 out of 68) have a restricted distribution in one of the two major regions, Bohemia or Moravia. We compared
the classification into traditional associations with the numerical classification of 1440 phytosociological relevés from
the Czech Republic, in order to test whether the traditionally recognized associations with small geographical ranges are
reflected in numerical classification. In various comparisons, the groups of relevés identified by numerical analysis occupied
larger areas than the traditional associations. This suggests that with consistent use of total species composition as the
vegetation classification criterion, the resulting classification will usually include more vegetation units with larger geographical
ranges, while many of the traditional local associations will disappear. 相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of cestodes of the order Pseudophyllidea (Platyhelminthes: Cestoda) were examined using sequences of complete small subunit and partial (D1-D3 region) large subunit nuclear rDNA of members of all pseudophyllidean families. The results provide evidence of paraphyly of the order as indicated by previous molecular phylogenetic analyses based on a much lower number of species sequenced. Pseudophyllidean tapeworms represent an artificial assemblage comprising two unrelated clades. “Bothriocephalidea” is formed by four families sensu Bray et al. (1994), namely Bothriocephalidae, Echinophallidae, Philobythiidae and Triaenophoridae, whereas two other families, Diphyllobothriidae and Cephalochlamydidae, give rise to the “Diphyllobothriidea”. The present results indicate that “Bothriocephalidea” forms the most derived clade of all difossate and tetrafossate/bothriate tapeworm lineages which are considered to be basal relative to the rest of tetrafossate/bothridiate and acetabulate cestodes. By contrast, “Diphyllobothriidea”, which includes medically important parasites (Diphyllobothrium and Spirometra), appeared more basal, without a clearly resolved position within other difossate tapeworm lineages. 相似文献

The direct HPLC enantioseparation of Mianserin and a series of aptazepine derivatives is accomplished on polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs). The resolutions are performed on the coated-type Chiralcel OD and Chiralpak AD CSPs and on the first commercially available immobilized-type Chiralpak IA CSP, in normal-phase and polar-organic modes. The complete separation of enantiomers of all racemates investigated was successfully achieved under at least one of CSP/eluent combinations employed. Pure alcohols such ethanol or 2-propanol, with a fixed percentage of DEA added, serve as valuable alternatives to the more common n-hexane-based normal-phase eluents in resolution of Mianserin on the AD CSP. In order to study the chiroptical properties of aptazepine derivatives, chromatographic resolutions are carried out at semipreparative scale using Chiralpak AD and Chiralpak IA as CSPs. Nonconventional dichloromethane-based eluents have permitted to expand the chiral resolving ability of the immobilized Chiralpak IA CSP and to perform mg-scale enantioseparations with an analytical-size column.
